Creating Estella

I was really pleased with how my Estella assessment went, I really enjoyed it as its a more beautiful look to the Miss Havisham and has a much more modern feel as the hair can be quite bridal. I was really pleased with the outcome of my make-up application and hair style. If I was to re-do this assessment I would have made the hair style higher and bigger with the details so it stood out a little more by backcombing and placing all the detail slightly higher up, although I am still happy with it how it is. I wanted to keep the make-up very natural as make-up was still not worn boldly during this period so to use some more techniques I decided to bruise one of her eyes as if she had been punched by Drummle, I liked using the grease paints for this as they blended together really well and went on top of the foundation perfectly. I kept the design for the make-up relatively quick and easy as I was worried I wouldn't be able to do the hair on time but as I had loads of time left over after completing both hair and make-up, next time I would try and incorporate another detail to show her domestic abuse like a small cut on the lip or finger marks around the neck.

Here are my final images from my Estella assessment.

Creating Miss Havisham - Comparing continuity images

Unfortunately the lighting was very different in the second image and I had thought it looked better when I was checking it on the thumbnail screen on the camera while I was taking them. Due to the assessment being timed, as well as getting the hair and make-up done in the time required we also had to take our pictures quite quickly so everyone had a chance to use the camera. Because of the lighting in the second image the make-up has been quite washed out compared to the first image so the details aren't fully viewable. This is a shame because I was very proud of my continuity make-up, albeit being simple I was still very pleased with how it came out and especially the placement of the tear streaks and cracked, peeling lips. I think they looked realistic and not too overdone which I was worried I would get carried away and do. Despite counting the curls I made in the first assessment and repeating the same steps as before during the second they still didn't manage to look too similar and fell slightly differently by the face and didn't have the same shape. This was the part of the assessment I was mostly worried about and which I thought may be a problem, however believe that practise and experience will help avoid these problems for the future. Overall I enjoyed the challenge of this assessment and was really pleased with the make-up turn out, the lack of quality in the second photo is a shame but will make me pay closer attention to this in future assessments.

Creating Miss Havisham - Continuity part 2

Here are my photographs from my continuity part 2 assessment, I wasn't as pleased with this assessment as I would have liked to have been. I was happy with how the make-up came out as I felt like it was just as I had done it the first time but I think I was let down by the hair. The curls at the sides of the face aren't the same as how they looked in the first assessment, which I preferred and this is the part I was most worried about not coming out the same! In the first image I feel like the brightness off the photo doesn't show the make-up as clearly as I would like it too.

Creating Miss Havisham - Continuity part 1

These are my images from the first part of my continuity assessment, I took these on my mobile so I could print them out so I had loads of visual references to help me with the hard part of this brief - the continuity part 2! Following these are my professional images from the day. I was pleased with the outcome of this assessment and feel confident with the make-up in that I believe I will be able to recreate this again, however the hair I am quite concerned about as I found controlling how the curls looked very difficult. I made sure to count the flowers I added to the back of the head and took note of where each on was placed so I can get this detail correct again.

Estella's make-up - Design & practise & assessment

Design:

I decided to go for a more natural look with Estella and do a light and clean base with subtle eyebrow definition and peachy tinted lips. This would go well with the pretty  hair style I am having her wear. As she was married to a man who treated her horribly and abused her I decided to try out a mid-healing black eye. This is the image I used to inspire the colours and tones I want to use:

Products:
- Kryolan neutral matte eyeshadow palette
- Illamasqua 'Lover' blush
- Translucent Illamasqua powder
- Brushes
- Powder puff
- Kryolan foundation palette
- Kryolan mini lip palette - LC002 & LC003
- Supra Color in yellow, purple and black

Consultation notes:
Model - Madison Cotton
Skin - Pale, combination skin
No allergies or contra-indications

1) Apply a foundation base all over cleansed, toned and moisturised skin.
2) Create a black eye using Supra color in yellow, purple and black. Begin with a yellow base and build up the darker colours over the top. When  happy, powder it and the rest of the base.
3) Apply a small amount of Lover blush on a blush brush and lightly apply to the centers of the cheeks.
4) Use a matte mid brown eyeshadow from a Kryolan palette and lightly define the crease of the eye.
5) Using the same shade as for the eye, use an angled liner brush to lightly define the brows.
6) Take a lip brush and dab Kryolan lipstick in a mix of shades LC002 and LC003 onto the lips for a natural look.

Practice:

Assessment:

Contemporary Victorian hair styles inspired by American Horror Story

Equipment:
-Tail comb
-Paddle brush
- Curling wand
- Grips and pins

Style 1 - Moira the maid:
1) Once the hair has set and cooled remove all pins from the back and sides and let the hair down
2) Brush the hair gently to let the curls drop slightly and then you can begin the styling
3) Working from one side, around the back of the head until you reach the other side and twist the hair upwards, tucking it in to itself and secure with grips making sure they are hidden

4) You can use your tail comb to assist and to help give it more shape
5) You can then take down the curls at the front and brush them gently like you did the first time and sweep them down the sides so they form a nice wave and you can position the ends in pin curl style curls for decoration. Play around and layer the sections until you are happy.

6) You can use the tail comb to add height and shape at the front of the style too.

Style 2: Glamorous, down style:
1) Remove all grips and pins to let down the Moira hair style and gently brush the hair style out going over and under each section of hair for a full bodied and bouncy waved effect.
2) Push the front sections forward then back away from the face with the brush and keep playing with it until you are happy with the outcome

Style 3:
For this look I simply shook the head forward and back until I achieved this messy, crazy and untamed style.

I really enjoyed this lesson, especially creating the first and second style as it is more contemporary than the styles we learnt for Miss Havisham and Estella and had a glamorous and more polished finish. I love adding detailing to hair styles such as the pin curls and as a lover of the Moira character (young and old) in American Horror Story I would have loved to put this together with some make-up to see the finished outcome!
